Trying to cure the problem must take a very high priority, but an early and immediate attempt should be made to contact other people, such as rescue services and nearby vessels, to alert them to the situation and request assistance. A vessel or crew with a serious problem, but not yet in a distress situation, should send a Pan Pan message rather than a Mayday.

Vessels with DSC can initiate a Pan Pan following the procedure outlined in the appropriate equipment manual. On a DSC VHF this is done as follows:

•Press MENU

•Scroll to ALL SHIPS CALL (to broadcast to all DSC enabled stations and vessels in range)

•Press ENTER

•Scroll to URGENCY

•Press ENTER

•Press ENTER again to confirm (the message has been sent)

The digital message sent will include your MMSI number but NOT your position. DSC equipment will repeat the message every four minutes until a digital acknowledgement is received or the alert is cancelled.

After sending the DSC alert, wait 15 seconds and then give a voice Pan Pan call and message over the radio including the position of the vessel. This will ensure everyone in receipt of the alert will know the location of the vessel, and anyone nearby without DSC will also receive the alert.
